There are obvious glitches in this book
'Not enough on how to write great lyrics, writing from title
Not enough on chord progressions
Seems to be a lot about the business side of songwritin

I would recommend books by Andrea Stolpe or Pat Pattison if you are really serious about songwiting as a profession

Alan Alda's autobiography travels a path less taken. Instead of a sensationalist, name-dropping page-turner, Alda writes about his life as a memory play, an exercise in recollecting his childhood, his parents (dad Robert was a veteran on stage, film, and vaudeville), and his career. You want to know about Alda's most famous work, the eleven years on M*A*S*H? You have exactly 16 pages to do so, and guess what: It's one of the least entertaining parts of the book. But should fans of the award-winning actor-writer-director avoid this slim memoir? Not in the slightest. Slyly humorous and open-hearted, Never Have Your Dog Stuffed is a breezy, most enjoyable read. Alda's ability to recall his childhood (including backstage at raunchy vaudeville shows), school years, stage struggles and successes is as entertaining as one of his Emmy-winning teleplays. Alda is inordinately attune recalling life's crystallizing moments: when religion no longer worked for him, how something in his pocket made him forever a better actor, or his mother's painful descent into dementia. Alda's ever present humor is a great asset whether telling a charming love story on meeting his wife Arlene or a life-threatening illness in a remote part of Chile ("I am in and out of consciences, but I never take a break from the screaming. The show must go on."). Like Alda's persona, his book is more human and less flash. What would be filler in most books is often the mot entertaining and revealing here; especially Alda's dynamic relationship with his parents. Really, who else would name his memoir after an unfortunate trip to the taxidermist? While listening to Alda's colorful and often poignant recollections, it becomes clear that, in addition to being a consummate actor, he is an introspective storyteller who isn't constrained by memory. Indeed, Alda's tales are sometimes surreally vivid, particularly those from when he was a toddler. "From my earliest days, I was standing off to the side watching, trying to understand a world that fascinated me," he recalls. Alda's autobiography is equally fascinating. With a touch of wonderment in his voice, he tells of weeks spent traveling with his father's burlesque company, of time spent with his dog Rhapsody (before he was stuffed), of a lifetime spent coping with his mother's mental illness and of the highs and lows of his acting career. Though the organization of these musings can feel disjointed, Alda's intimate, dynamic narration makes one feel as if you're sitting across from a wise and entertaining friend, the kind you could listen to for hours.

Alda, Emmy winning star of television's M*A*S*H as well as a writer and director, candidly details his turbulent childhood and the lessons he learned during his event-filled life in this breezy collection of remembrances and anecdotes. His father, Robert, was a fairly famous actor, and this led to a somewhat unconventional lifestyle (for the 1940s and 1950s anyway) for young Alan. Fondly, he remembers traveling around the country following his father's career and hanging out with unusual characters from his father's burlesque shows, while at the same time dealing with real adolescent troubles, such as encounters with bullies at the various schools where he never really fit in. He also shares details of the family's struggles with his mother's undiagnosed schizophrenia. Alda shows how he not only coped with these hurdles but also learned from them, as stories from his successful adult life round out the book. Refreshingly, this collection of biographical sketches is written in a good-natured and compassionate way. A large publicity effort is under way for this release, and Alda is a well-liked and well-known celebrity, so librarians should stock up. Kathleen Hughes

A great guy but a disappointing book.

Alan Alda has always been a hero of mine but I found the book rather disappointing. The feistiness of his personality, which I admire,
somehow doesn't come through. I really admire his loyalty to his wife and daughters and would have liked a little more on them.

Get your heart and soul stuffed!

My heart and soul were stuffed by his wonderful book. His ability to elicit immense laughter absent of personal presence was amazing. I burst out laughing on so many occasions! Truly a reflection of improv treasures he possesses, even as a writer. The depths of revelations of his personal life and acting struggles were especially interesting to read about...it was also like a treasure hunt in finding out about how history was made with MASH! Truly acts of God, and the strengths of a wonderful human spirit, were revealed in his work...and especially in finding out that his father was in MASH scenes, something I never knew! Not only is Alan a great actor, but he equally can elicit strong emotion at whim from his reading audience. Such a great artist! Such a great human being! If you want to learn about him, and some other interesting aspects about human behaviors, especially in the acting world, read his book!

Applications of DSP

As a previous reader correctly pointed out, this book (TADSP), from Rabiner & Gold (R&G), is not a DSP book for beginners. This book was written in 1975, along with the book Digital Signal Processing from Oppenheim & Schafer (O&S), while the authors of both books - Oppenheim, Schafer, Rabiner and Gold - lived in the MIT/Bell Labs ecosystem. So, the book from R&G was to be a complement to the DSP book from O&S, which is much more focused into the fundamentals of DSP and it is a rather pedagogical text (perhaps still the most effective yet, IMHO).

TADSP from O&S has some dated chapters on Hardware for DSP, finite word length effects (an important issue back then, when processors with 8-bit words were used to implement FIR filters, and such,...) which nevertheless convey important information, such as the design of hardware for implementing FFTs. Some nice chapters are about FIR and IIR Filters, Spectrum Estimation, Speech Processing, 2-Dimensional DSP, and DSP for radar applications. I use it as a reference often. My old copy is 11th printing (I bought it used a few years ago), so TADSP has been a DSP bestseller along the years. If you want to have a snapshot of (still important) applications and "industrial" techniques of DSP when DSP was exploding and starting to influence many scientific and technological areas, you cannot go wrong with TADSP.

I had the unfortunate experiance of having this book as my first book on DSP. It is an industrial strength DSP book intended for practising engineers. It deals with the foundations of DSP in a rather cursory manner. Rabiner rushes into filters, pratical DSP tools almost in the first few chapters.
A good book for experts a bad one for beginners...

A very different drawing book

[[VIDEOID:mo3GGHHIDG4J7I5]]This book takes a rather academic approach to teach drawing. By academic, I mean lots of text and instructions with not much visuals.

While the instructions are clear and easy to follow, the lessons would be more fun and impactful with more illustrated examples.

Say for example, there's a section where it talks about values and the different effects that result. It's difficult to feel the effect when you're just reading about them and can't see them, although I must say that there are exercises in the book where you practice creating those values. Half the book are instructions with blank space for you to draw on so I guess you'll have lots of practice.

By the way, the most important pages in the book are pages 10 and 11 on drawing what you see by measuring and judging the relationship between spaces and points. Many of the later lessons use the techniques taught in those two pages.

Personally for me, I prefer a book on drawing instructions with lots of drawing, such as Bert Dodson's Keys to Drawing, or even Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards which has lots of text too. I guess I'm not particularly inspired by this book because it does not show what you can achieve after going through the lessons -- there aren't a lot of visual examples as I've mentioned.

Ignore your fears and just DRAW!

I am still working my way through this book, but I like it. At first I was a bit nervous to start drawing in the book, but then I realized that that is what it's for! So I threw out my fear and started drawing. My first drawing was even recognizable to someone else without prompting (a tornado - well, two tornados - although he thought my tree in the whirlwind was a house, but whatever, that's why I'm reading this book, right?)

I like that it gives you both the reasons for doing something as well as the instructions. So you're also learning how to appreciate art/drawing as you're learning how to do it.

I wish the book had actually been spiral bound, rather than glue/perfect binding, so that it would be easier to use it as a sketchbook.

Practical information for those of us with no art background

This book explains art concepts like open and closed compositions, line and form, perspective, etc. in an interesting way that helps me understand how to use these concepts to improve my drawing. As each concept is explained, there is opportunity for practice right in the book. I do not understand the review that said there is a lot of text. The vast majority of the pages are mostly blank with instructions about how to use the concept being studied. So, don't let the idea that this book is wordy or long winded turn you off. In my opinion, it is quite the opposite.

I believe that I will be better (not necessarily good) at drawing when I complete the book. Furthermore, the practice is fun! So, for those of you who, like me, have purchased "beginning drawing" books in the past and found them to be over your head by chapter 3, this is a good book for you to try! You can't help but learn, and you'll have a good time doing it!

Great Book

During one of my rough days as a substitute teacher, I got the idea of having the class look up their favorite city on Google-Earth, hoping to kill time until the bell rang. One of them picked Los Angeles, and inquired about the “gray thing” running through the city. “That’s the Los Angeles river” I told him. More questions followed about why it was that color, and I explained that he was looking at concrete. The river runs through a man-made concrete bank, designed to conserve the water and prevent flooding. The next questions was “how come there’s no water in it?” and I replied “LA is arid, so the river’s usually dry.” More questions, this time on how they can fill all those swimming pools.

The fact of the matter is, throughout the USA, we have cities that are not naturally sustainable. LA was nothing until the dams and aqueducts came in, and even today you’d think they’d have a water shortage. Same thing with Las Vegas, Phoenix, El Paso, and just about every other city in the Southwest. So many of our cities grew up from unnatural beginnings, with no plan for how they’d get food, water, or building materials, nor any plan for bringing them in.

One of the first essays is Aldo Leopold’s Land Ethic, written in the 1940’s. The conservationist discusses communities setting rules for land use, agreeing on the best way to save water, dispose of waste, and take care of all the environmental issues that will effect the people. Unfortunately, his essay stresses “community” which doesn’t always suffice. If an industrialist wants to put a factory in a community, he can bypass their laws by applying to the state for eminent domain. The same holds true for water use; it is usually up to the state, not the community. Take for instance the recent controversy with the village of Kiryas Joel in upstate New York. The village wants to drill wells into the aqueduct, and the surrounding residents claim this will deplete the aquifer which all of them are using. One community’s needs may trump the other’s.

Fast forward to 1993 with Peter Calthorpe’s The Next American Metropolis. He argues that car use has increased, leading to greater sprawl (or vice versa.) His argument is that while Americans were car-dependent back in the 70’s (OPEC embargo as proof) we were driving a lot less than we are now. Commutes were shorter, and houses were smaller, but as Americans desired bigger homes, the builders took their blueprints out into the sticks. He cites “traditional” neighborhoods, with tightly packed townhouses, where everyone gets along and you can walk to the store, school, and library, but this did not work in post WWII USA. According to him, Americans liked the feeling of privacy, so a private backyard made sense. A swimming pool in the backyard would definitely ice the cake of suburbia, along with a nice big private driveway, and a front yard to seclude the house from the street. But when you add those things together, you get increased auto traffic, water use, and lack of sociability. In New Jersey there’s a beautiful town of wooden homes called Ocean Grove, and it’s definitely a sociable community. But it would not work everywhere. A lot of people still want private houses.

The Sustainable Urban Development Reader is a collection of writings on this topic. One of the greatest things about it is that it doesn’t draw any conclusions, that’s left to the scholar. There’s no sense in arguing that the desert is infertile or that New Orleans has poor drainage, those are facts. What the book does is it collects articles on sustainability going back decades, all the way to the days when some of our greatest cities barely existed.

An interesting read that I may read outside of class-assigned chapters

An interesting read that highlights sections of various articles, reports and books that have been written on subjects related to sustainable development.

The book was in decent condition with no writing or highlighting and a normal amount of wear from a couple semesters of use.

I'm usually resistant to assigning books of documents when I believe that the class could be better served by my own online selection. However I would have assigned this if it was still in print. A very good selection and very clear introductions

Feels like Wendell Berry but urban and modern

I always find it hard to write reviews of fiction books I really like. I never want to give away too much of the plot. And I usually fall back to talking about how beautiful the language is or how engaging the plot.

But asking you to trust me is not good enough. Thin Blue Smoke is not an action packed story. It is a story that you make your way through. At some point I felt like it might never end. And then I hoped it wouldn't ever end.

The connecting tissue of the book is Smoke Meat. A small BBQ joint in Kansas City. The owner is a former baseball player. His assistant AB is his late son's best friend. Their regular customers include an elderly blues singer, an alcoholic Episcopal priest and professor, a wealthy developer, cops, journalists and more.

This books jumps all over time, from character to character revealing more and more about the common human nature and need of all people. There are lots of mistakes and sins that have brought everyone to where they are right now. But there is also a God that is present, even in tragedy.

This is a book about the journey toward redemption. The conclusion is a bit abrupt and not completely satisfying,b ut the point of the book is not the conclusion. The point of the story is the journey.

This is not a standard fare Christian novel. It clearly is a Christian novel. God is present here. Thin Blue Smoke presents characters as real people. They drink, have sex, curse, kill, cry and love. This is the type of Christian novel that changes people's perceptions of Christian novels. Christian novels can be more than thinly veiled evangelism or Amish romance. Christian novels can present true life, the way that we actually live it, not just the idealized way that we wish we could.

Three Things I Love

I was talking to a friend recently about this wonderful novel I had just read called Thin Blue Smoke. "It's about baseball, barbecue and God," I told him. "Three things I love."

In truth, baseball and God are more behind the scenes players in the novel set at a Kansas City barbecue joint that also pulls in a series of other topics ranging from gentrification and civil rights to mental illness, alcoholism and problem gambling.

The barbecue joint, affectionately known as Smoke Meat, is a key player in the narrative that unfolds about its grumpy former Kansas City Athletics outfielder owner LaVerne Williams and the diverse cast of characters who frequent Kansas City's best kept culinary secret. Through the richly developed characters, Doug Worgul weaves the kind of story that brings the characters so vividly to life you'll find yourself wanting to Google them to see "where they are now" when you finish reading it.

I'm a recent convert to the world of barbecue enthusiasm, thanks in part to the aforementioned friend who most recently introduced me to Carolina barbecue. Before reading Thin Blue Smoke I would say everything I knew about appreciating barbecue I learned from him. Worgul, who in his bio is referenced as "a nationally-recognized authority on the history and cultural significance of American barbecue traditions," has now become my other source for appreciating not just the culture and tradition, but the spiritual significance as well.

Barbecue, as Williams explains toward the end of the book, is about making something special out of the not so glamorous, taking the pieces of meat that would be otherwise discarded or tough to eat and turning them into something memorable. This process occurs not just with the meat in this story, but with the people whose lives cross paths and change forever over a checkered tablecloth and a basket of smoked brisket.

A true testament to Worgul's gift as as a writer and food critic is his ability to bring you into this world without making you feel like an outsider who has only ever eaten at Famous Dave's. Like the fictional BBQ joint that welcomes all comers, Worgul's book manages to include all of the elements of a great novel English majors spend four years studying without ever coming across as one of those books that strokes literary critics egos while boring everyone else to tears (there's a reason I've read so little fiction since earning a degree in English). In the end, the book accomplishes what all good works of art should - it inspired me to consider taking up fiction writing again, imagining and re-visiting characters I've created and long since forgotten from my days as an aspiring fiction writer.

At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, the book has done for me at 34 what To Kill A Mockingbird did to me at 13. It's restored my love and appreciation of the novel and reminded me the value and importance of stories that come to life and characters who occupy our imaginations.

Smoky, Tasty Redemption Tale

I am seriously moved, definitely warmed and inspired as I just finished a new novel by Doug Worgul, entitled, Thin Blue Smoke.

These characters got into my heart and let me know I still have a heart. They're real and flawed. Some of them have had some really bad breaks in life, but those bad breaks did not set their destiny; one human being caring about another did.

Having stumbled upon a review while surfing my Facebook updates, it was the context of Kansas City barbecue that intrigued me because I love barbecue and spent a good many years living just north and later, just south of KC. A downtown hole-the-wall barbecue joint is a connecting point for many of the characters in the story.

Food, friends, and faith are all meshed in a raw and real way to keep you eagerly reading. I was sucked in with a mention of my hometown in the first paragraph of chapter one and later references to obscure northwestern Missouri locales, all of which were familiar to me.

Worgul is a former features, book and magazine editor for the Kansas City Star, the author of two non-fiction works, and a bona fide barbecue expert. He writes so beautifully and warmly that you know this man knows something about people, God, relationships, redemption, and barbecue. It's not preachy in the least and is not a Christian book, in any conventional sense, but its message of love and redemption through relationships is, perhaps, the most beautiful I have ever read.

The characters are colorful, including the cranky old former professional baseball player and proprietor of the BBQ joint, the sort of adopted lost boy who runs the place, the scholarly, alcoholic, has been author Episcopal priest, the real estate developer with a secret, and the seventy-five year-old local legend blues singer, known as Mother. These are real people who have serious regrets, drink too much, have sex, and yes, some of them, are violent and corrupt. Not everyone is redeemed. It's like life.

There are scenes so tender that they got to a crusty old dude like me. The eccentricities of the people made me laugh out loud and the circumstances of their love and grief caused me to weep silently.

I loved reading this rich and rewarding story set in a place I know, but it is the people (I don't even think of them as characters) that encouraged me and inspired me to see if maybe, somehow in the twists and turns of life, I could be something of a redeeming influence for somebody.
