Monocle Vienna's Whitewashed Take on History

A study in how to rewrite history, Monocle's Vienna includes a wide variety of essays on the city's history including some very major gaps. Marie-Sophie Schwarzer's laughable history of the city suggests Vienna attacked an "influx of people from different backgrounds" but notes the "tide turned during the Second World War." (Yup that's it on WW2, which is presented as a passing hiccup).Now though she affirms the city is a "magnet for immigrants from all corners of the world." What's missing? Just the fact that of Vienna's 200,000 Jews all but 2,000 were murdered in the Holocaust. Plus the fact that Vienna became a cosmopolitan cultural center largely thanks to those Jews (Freud to Mahler on down). You can try to write Jews out of history. But if you do you erase the driving force of Vienna's golden age, and the horror of its downfall.

Superb Introduction to Solo Playing - ANY INSTRUMENT!

I first got this book (in 1971!) as a percussionist and worked through the solos on the vibes. It stimulated me to explore more on Bach, Handel, Telemann. When I started classical guitar (1973) it was perfect for getting me to traverse the fingerboard. I ignored the percussion notation (sticking, etc.) and added string, fret and finger notation. Later (1974), I studied flute and used the collection again ignoring the percussion and guitar notation and built a decent flute technique. Now that I am studying violin and tenor recorder, I couldn't ask for a better collection. I bought a new copy through Amazon so that I start again with adding violin notation - there was no room to add anything in my first copy which I have owned for 41 years...

Needed for solo competition. Had the music needed. Shipment was very fast. Got here faster than estimated. etc, etc,etc. Had to do that to reach the minimum number of words.

Maya Angelou was raised in Stamps, Arkansas. I've been a huge fan of Maya Angelou for decades now. I have had the great honor of having seen Maya Angelou speak twice before a live audience... She was a phenomenal speaker!!

I recently read the hardback edition of Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou. This book captured my interested due to the unique relationship between mothers and daughters and also because, I wanted to learn more about the relationship Maya Angelou had with her mother.

I thought Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou was overall a good read and would recommend this book to others. My only major complaint is that many of the life events that Maya Angelou discusses in this particular book have also been discussed in her other books. So, I only learned a few new things about her life that I didn't know before, which was disappointing to me as I wasn't expecting so much of Mom & Me & Mom to be a rehash of what I'd already read in her other books.

All mothers deserve a thank you

Expected a lot more from Ms. Angelou, but this is not "I Know Why a Caged Bird Sings." If you've read any of her other books, in "Mom" you'll come across similar passages. It's a simple tribute to her mother, written in simple declarative sentences. I got the feeling she wrote it because she felt she owed her mother a 'thank you.' All mothers deserve a thank you. It's clear that her mother's love and support enabled Ms. Angelou to share her talents with the world.

Not quite what I expected.

This is my first book by Maya Angelou. It was a quick read (one afternoon in about 3 hours) and I enjoyed the story of her relationship with her mother. Angelou's mother is a very colorful character and is what makes this book so interesting. I have only really ever just heard about Maya Angelou and it was very interesting to me to read about her life which was very different than what I thought it was. The only problem I had with the book was that I felt there were large gaps in the story- she seemed to just jump from one thing to another and I would have to re-read to figure out if she was changing subjects, or jumping to another moment in time, or what. It wasn't quite what I was expecting. I think I was expecting something a little more in depth. However, it was an enjoyable read. I will now look to read her "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" because I've been reading about how much better it is than this. Linda Muse

About the Author
Kim Boyce is a former pastry chef (at Spago and Campanile). She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, who is a chef at Spago, and two daughters. While at Campanile, she helped Nancy Silverton with her Sandwich Book (Knopf, 2002) and has cooked alongside chefs like Mario Batali, Claudia Fleming, Lidia Bastianich, Alice Waters, and Anthony Bourdain. She has contributed to Bon Appetit and has been featured in the Los Angeles Times on numerous occasions (both as subject and contributor).

Baking "with" whole grains, but not "of" them

This book is gorgeous, and a great choice for those who are trying to add variety to their baking and sneak in some whole grain goodness. I admit to being disappointed though when I got it and realized that the majority of recipes call for a significant amount of all-purpose white flour. After all the glowing reviews I had hoped that somehow (miraculously!) someone had finally figured out how to make these delicious treats without it. She addresses this head-on at the start of the book and talks about the compromises she's had to make to retain the texture and loft of the baked goods, but I hadn't seen it mentioned in any reviews so I wasn't aware of it when I purchased it online. I'll still enjoy it, and look forward to happily making many of these delicious recipes. I'll just make them less frequently than if they were "of" whole grain rather than "with" whole grain.

Amazing cookbook, batting 1000 so far.

I am so impressed with this cookbook. I've posted pics of some of the things I've tried out of it so far -- the whole wheat chocolate chip cookies, the Spelt Flour Currant scones and the Sweet Potato Muffins (with buttermilk, yogurt and medjool dates). All 3 recipes I followed pretty much to the T, and all 3 came out just fantastic. Really, really good stuff. I can't wait to try more of these recipes. It is so fun to work with the different flours, and apparently Kim put a whole lot of care and precision into making sure that each of these recipes works just right. I'm very, very happy with this purchase and can wholeheartedly recommend this cookbook to anyone interested in trying out baking with new types of flour. A+

Makes you feel like a REAL baker!

I love this book! I just know it's going to change my life. I've never been confident about baking, er, I should say I never was, but I am now. I heard Kim interviewed on the radio and when she was talking about all the different flours it really opened up the whole idea of baking to me. I had no idea there were so many interesting possibilities with all these different grain flours.

I bought two copies of her book and gave one to a baker friend. I've had it two weeks and have made five things: cast-iron flatbread, corn gruyère muffins, cheddar biscuits, sand cookies, and tonight the olive oil bread. All of them have been fantastic. I made the flatbread and asked my boyfriend to make some kind of fajitas with it, and he did and we were in heaven. We took Kim's suggestion on the muffins and he made chili to go with them. A couple of nights ago I made the sand cookies at midnight and making them without a bowl or utensils was like a meditation. Only your hands and it really looked and felt like sand. Was a wonderful experience and would be fun for kids learning how to bake.

Tonight I made the olive oil cake with rosemary and bittersweet chocolate. Was crazy good, like a cross between bread and cake. I really can't stand super sweet things so this was perfect. My housemate, who has tried all of them, said it was the best so far, and she has been raving the whole time. She gave me notice she was moving out before I got the book but said I was making it really hard to leave with all this baking I'm doing! Oh, and I forgot to mention that before I started on the first recipe, I went out and bought all the flours she uses in the book, so I would be prepared. I'm just so excited to keep baking, and to try the next recipe. She is really creative and has clearly put a lot of thought into this book.

I have so much anticipation for each recipe because they are all consistently wonderful. As soon as I finish one, in my mind I say, "Ok, which one will I make next?" I'm possessed with the new desire to bake, and all my friends love it. My only criticism would be that she doesn't mention how many each recipe will serve, but I do love the way she clearly puts out the ingredients and separates them into "wet mix" and "dry mix". I'm totally hooked and can't wait to make ALL the recipes, and then buy her next book!

Better Changes Found

Sher has done a wonderful job of publishing tunes with the correct changes. Original as well as alternate changes are provided in easy to read, full page format. This is a big help for people like myself who have trouble reading small print. The spiral binding of the book allows for easy turning of the pages.

Finally, a legit copy of the jazz musician's BIBLE!

From playing in both my high school's and college's jazz ensembles, it was clear to me that "The Real Book" was the bible of jazz standards. No instructor was without a copy. As a bass player, there have been countless times were I was just tossed a photocopy of a page from the Real Book and the instructions of "Here, do a walk over this chord progression."
A number of things made this book the most demanded of its kind. First of all, it contained hundreds and hundreds of jazz songs in a single volume. Second of all, it mostly followed a one-page-per-song format, showing the most essential parts: the chord and structure changes, the introductions, and the melody. If a song seemed to center around something like a particular repeated bass line, then that line was also shown. And last but certainly not least, the type face and unique "hand written" look made it the by far easiest book to physically read (no eye strain!)
Unfortunately, The Real Book was next to impossible to hunt down. No music stores carried it, or at least admitted to carrying it. It was pretty much an under-the-counter item that you could only get if you knew somebody. I guess these $50 books were always secretly copied and bounded in some local guy's basement, in hopes of skirting all the legal copyright issues.
Finally, Sher Music Co. has taken the original Real Book, got copyright clearance from each and every living composer, and in so doing even got to correct many mistakes based off the the composers' very own lead sheets. They also threw in a number of full-page photographs of jazz greats. The result is the only LEGAL, updated, and widely obtainable version of the original underground book.
One of the reviewers here seemed to make the gross assumption that this is a piano book. It's not. It's a book for everybody in the band. The fact that there are C, Bb and Eb versions of the book should tell you this. I've always been amused by "Piano/Vocal" sheet music books for bands that never even had a piano or keyboard player. For rock bands, they usually attempt a bad transcription of the guitar on the treble clef, and an even worse transcription of the bass on the bass cleff (written an octave down, of course).
Which brings me to the reason why this book was always called "The REAL Book": it's because it didn't take the shortcuts that "Fake Books" take. "Fake Books" are called such because they allow you to "fake" the song, i.e. dumb-down some chord changes, play it in a presumably easier key, and usually even try to adapt the whole song to the single instrument of piano.
It's so great to see a legit copy of this book in print. If you play jazz, this is the one book always worth investing in.
