SAN ANTONIO, June 9, 2001 ? The Text and Academic Authors Association awarded "Fundamentals of Materials Science and Engineering: An Interactive Text", by William D. Callister, Jr., the 2001 Textbook Excellence Award (Texty) during the association's awards banquet. The book is published by John Wiley & Sons. Among judges' comments: "This book appears to be much better than the text I used in college. The figures are nicely done, and a second color is used effectively. The text is clearly written and well-designed.
A superior textbook on materials. Many outstanding illustrations. The inclusion of ceramics and polymers is a plus for modern engineers."

TAA created the Textbook Excellence Award in 1992 to recognize current textbooks and learning materials. To be nomiated, a work must carry a copyright date for the previous or current year. Entries are not limited to books but may include learning materials of all mediums.

The Text and Academic Authors Association was established in 1987 for people interested in developing and publishing all kinds of educational materials, including textbooks, software, videos, monographs, reference books, newsletters, multimedia CD-ROM disks and others. TAA represents text and academic authors in matters involving them, including taxes, copyright and better appreciation of their work within academe. The association is also committed to improving the quality of educational materials.

About the Author
William D. Callister is currently an adjunct professor in the Department of Engineering at the University of Utah. His teaching interests include writing and revising introductory materials science and engineering textbooks, in both print and electronic formats. He also enjoys developing ancillary resources, including instructional software and on-line testing/evaluation tools.

Excellent introduction into the field

This book does an excellent job outlining the theoretical background and applications of geostatistics. After an overview and explanation of a concept (often involving some mathematical notation) the authors drop back and give an "intuitive" approach to the subject that I find incredibly beneficial.
I am a self-taught student of geostats, and this book is my tutor. While I would prefer some formal instruction to augment this text, the text is excellent and a must-read for any student of the field.

Very good introduction to Geostatistics

This book is an excellent introduction to the somewhat difficult field of geostatistics. The examples in the book are based on the analysis of a digital elevation model transformed into data variables. This approach works very well and the explanatory text is very readable and understandable. Initially I thought that the math would make difficult reading but I am pleased to be wrong. The basics of Geostatistics can be understood from this book without having to translate the formulae ! An alternative very quick introduction to Geostatistics may be found in Burrough and McDonnell - Principles of Geographical Information Systems pp 132-161. My background is in Geology & GIS.

Marvellous art book

[[VIDEOID:mo1KL1OT4EA2U93]]The Art of Last of Us is a wonderful art book to Naughty Dog's latest game. I also have the Uncharted 2 art book and I love that book. I love this one too.

This book is packed with character designs and environment art. The concept art is top notch.

All the characters and infected are drawn out in detail and colour. There are various designs for each character. Lots to see. The infected, if you have not played the game, are not traditional zombies. They have been infected by some deadly fungus that grows and consumes the human body. You get to see some interesting and scary designs that you would not get from typical zombies.

The environment art are painted with astonishing amount of detail that makes everything seem so real. There are the devastated towns, rundown buildings, deserted streets and ransacked rooms. Most scenes depicted will make you wonder what the hell happened there. The level of realism you see here is unmatched even by big budget movie sets.

Spoilers appear in the book either as text or pictures. So definitely play the game first before going through the book. Other than that, there's not much text except the occasional comments on the art and game.

This is a fantastic video game art book. Highly recommended.

Everything you need, perhaps too much?

Don't get me wrong, the art in this game is massive and detailed, and I love reading (and seeing) production sketches, and whatnot, and for the price listed here, a VERY good deal, and companion with the game (which is incredible.)

The only thing is, there ARE spoilers in the book, so either read after the game, or stop when you see something unfamiliar.

That's about it. If you're impressed with the game, this is a very good bargain for your money, and enjoyable.

Just keep in mind : This book is NOT a strategy guide, but it DOES have spoilers.

Lots of great character art expecially the infected part

The Art of The Last of Us by Dark Horse Books is a must for any Last of Us fan. The book is 176 pages and they load the pages with art so there's little wasted space. With this book you will get many variations of the characters and environments. Although with the characters I found that almost every single one is a frontal pose of a character with variations in clothing, the face, or something like that. This is not bad since their are a lot of them and they cover a lot of characters but I wish there were more angles and such, but none the less its still amazing.

The Book is divided into 7 chapters.
1. The Introduction is 2 pages and just talks about the creators making the game and stuff.
2. Joel and Ellie is 16 pages and has lots of different poses and variations of the two. There is commentary by the artists about what went through their minds when making the sketches and such which really lets you understand what they were thinking when they made the characters. Also they have pictures of how they were going to have Ellie look but switched to how she actually does look so that was cool to see how they first wanted her to look.
3.The Journey is 93 pages and has sketches and pictures of a bunch of characters and scenes that you encounter throughout the game. There's soldiers, thugs, some of the other main characters, and plenty of abandoned house and buildings. Their is lots of content here and the pages are jam packed. The concept art of the environments are really detailed and have excellent lighting.
4. The Infected is 29 pages and has lots of the different infected monsters. The pictures put you up close and personal to the infected and lets you see all the grossest features. From the bumps, blood, scars, and everything else they made sure to show just how ugly/scary the infected are. This chapter was really cool to look at and highly detailed.
5. The World is 6 pages and has really nothing to it except some signs and weapons which were not really all that great or detailed. There's bows, garden tools, guns, and pieces of metal for the weapons shown.
6. Marketing is 14 pages and has the art they used to promote the game and its basically just some concept art like what they have on the cover of the game and such.
7. The American Dream is 5 pages and is art from the comic book so if you like comic books you might enjoy this section since its just simple drawings comic book style.

Overall this book is a must for any fan of the game. It has lots of character variations and artist comments which really help you know just what went through their minds when making the characters and such. The environmental art is awesome and highly detailed with excellent lighting and color. The scenes show everything from old farms, run down cities, or even the quarantine zone. The infected look gruesome and lifelike and its really gross the amount of detail they put in some of the pictures, but that is what makes this book so good. Finally if your looking for some good character art this book has loads of it and although its mostly all frontal view it still is quite nice to look at and has many variations and characters. I highly recommend this art book and found it to be one of the better game art books.

Despite its title, this book is not a biography of either Gracie Allen or her husband and partner, George Burns, but rather a detailed history of the Burns & Allen TV show. As such, the writers have successfully re-created the 1950-58 program and at the same time revealed the warm relationship that existed between the dryly witty Burns and the zany on-stage character of the late Gracie Allen. In this era of expose biographies it is refreshing to read about two entertainers who were innately decent individuals and who were very much in love with each other. The book devotes a great deal of space to how a TV program is put together, and there is an appendix with synopses of all the shows. Most libraries should purchase. perfection in comedy

It just doesn't get any better than George and Gracie, and their love for each other. I adore reading about their vaudeville days, their marriage, and their wonderful performances. I watch their show every night on Antenna Retro TV here in Seattle. They were consummate performers; the writing was intelligent and hilarious, and it's so easy to love them!

A MUST-HAVE FOR ALL BURNS & ALLEN FANS

If only this classic book were back in print-not only is it a biography of George & Gracie, but it has several pages of pictures(many never before seen)as well as an appendix in the back giving the synopsis of every television episode from October 1950 thru September 1958. The book is a good alternate to Gracie-A Love Story written by George himself. On another note, if I may go a step further, why doesn't Nick-At-Nite pick up the series, surely it's been in syndication for about 40 years? It'd be great fun seeing them again-George, Gracie, their son Ronnie, Blanche & Harry Morton, & Harry Von Zell. Though they are quite dated, these shows are still screamingly funny today. Gracie Allen was the 2nd funniest woman in television, the 1st being the incomparable Lucille Ball. Highly recommended, especially if you are able to find it!

What a great book!

What a wonderful book about two of America's fabulous stars. The writing and the stories are excellent. I learned so much about the behind-the-scenes of the series and lives of the people who starred in/created the programs. Equally appreciated by me was the list and brief description of each TV episode. Miss Allen is portrayed as a warm and comic genius while Mr. Burns is portrayed as a genius in all phases of show business. This book is a must-read for any fan of Burns and Allen.
