About the Author
Scott A. Snell is the E. Thayer Bigelow Professor of Business Administration at Darden School of Business, where he teaches courses in Leadership and Strategic Management. Prior to joining the Darden faculty in 2007, Scott was professor and director of executive education at Cornell University's Center for Advanced Human Resource Studies, and a professor of management in the Smeal College of Business at Pennsylvania State University. Scott's research focuses on strategic human resource management. He was recently listed among the top 150 most-cited scholars in the field of management. He has worked with a number of Fortune 500 companies in the United States and Europe to align investments in talent and strategic capability. Scott is co-author of four books: Managing Human Resources, Management: Leading and Collaborating in a Competitive World, M: Management and Managing People and Knowledge in Professional Service Firms. Scott has served on the boards of: the Society for Human Resource Management Foundation, the Academy of Management's Human Resource Division, the Human Resource Management Journal, the Academy of Management Journal, and the Academy of Management Review.

Shad Morris teaches courses in human resource management and international business. Prior to joining the Marriott School in 2013, Shad was an assistant professor of management and human resources at The Ohio State University and has held appointments at the Sloan School of Management at MIT, Copenhagen Business School in Denmark, and SKK Graduate School of Business in South Korea. Shad's research focuses on strategic human resource management in a global environment. He has worked for the World Bank, Management Systems International, and Alcoa. He is the recipient of the International HRM Scholarly Research Award from the Academy of Management and is currently a Faculty Fellow at Cambridge University's Centre for International Human Resource Management. In addition, Shad currently serves on the board of the International Journal of Human Resource Management and is a founding editor of the Journal of Microfinance.

George Bohlander is Professor Emeritus of Management at Arizona State University, where he taught human resources and labor relations classes. He received six outstanding teaching awards, including the Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award presented by the College of Business, and the ASU Parents Association Teaching Award given annually by the university. Dr. Bohlander has published more than 50 articles and monographs in professional and practitioner journals, such as National Productivity Review, HR Magazine, Employee Relations Law Journal, The Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Public Sector, and Labor Law Journal. He is also a consultant to public and private organizations and an active labor arbitrator. He received his M.B.A. from the University of Southern California and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles.

I bought the Kindle version after having trouble reading the paper version. For some reason, it was easier to read it. Same format just electronic; however, I am still glad I have both versions. Switching back and forth between the two of them sometimes is also very calming.

Excellent!

I have to say, I wasn't expecting to learn much. I thought it would be a repeat of info in her other books and what is online. However, it was so much better than that. Have I seen the exercises before? Sure, I even do most of them on a regular basis. But it was the in-depth info that I found so great. Not just "do this." But *why*. A book about feet that's useful, informative and...entertaining. Whoa.

This book is surprisingly spectacular. If you're wondering how a book about feet and minimal footwear can be spectacular, well, then you haven't read the other books on the same subject.

I came to minimal footwear reluctantly and by accident, but my foot and back problems -- which I did not see as connected -- were wreaking havoc in my life. As soon as I moved to a big city in my early 30's and started walking full time on pavement, that was the end of a pain-free body as I knew it. My feet fell apart almost immediately. But it took years for me to figure out my shoes had anything to do with it.

Like most (?) people who embrace barefoot/barefoot-like footwear, I learned about it from the trusty internet. The problem is, the internet -- shock of shocks! -- is full of some very bad information. I read that basically just strapping on a pair of minimalist shoes and/or going barefoot was going to solve all of my problems, immediately. In truth, some of my problems resolved right away (no lower back pain, gone, just like that!); but my feet became a painful mess -- pain that would come and go, in places I'd never even had pain before.

I knew I was onto something with the minimal shoes because of the positive improvements, yet I knew something wasn't right because I kept experiencing injury. I think I've read every book on barefoot-ing out there -- even though much of it applies to running, which I don't do. Most of the books are terrible and full of pseudo-science and new age dogma, which I found to be a giant turn-off. Even more disappointing, most of the information stops with the foot itself -- not making the connection that the body, bio-mechanically, is whole, from head to foot.

Enter Katy Bowman. First of all, she's a very talented, funny writer, and she accomplishes something that almost seems impossible: this book is practically entertaining! She also has a knack for communicating complex ideas in a clear, convincing way; it's as if she's reminding you that many of the ideas espoused in this book are common sense, which they are.

I have been wearing minimalist shoes for a few years now -- not 100% of the time, but most of it (dress shoes, occasionally; sneakers once in a blue moon -- for the shallow reason of "fashion"). The improvement in pain has been extraordinary, yet I learned a lot in this book, which I think will, over time, will offer even more improvement (unlike other books, Katy is careful to point out that it's NOT an overnight miracle). I, too, have focused too much attention on my feet themselves, instead of considering the other muscles and systems involved in walking and movement in general.

If you experience any kind of bodily pain, I really can't recommend this book more highly. What this book offers is a real path to living a dramatically different life. That might sound like hyperbole, but it isn't. The absence of pain, even those small annoyances that many of us chalk up to the inevitable effects of aging, is truly liberating and life changing. Following the advice in this book, and completing the exercises, has the potential to be transformative. Really. And even if you don't have pain, that's an even better reason to read it: maybe you'll be spared the misery that so many of our bad habits eventually create.

I have read everything this author has written and didn't expect to learn much new from this book. Honestly, I bought it to give away to a friend. But I'm so glad I read it because it is both a more organized and a more in-depth version of her previous foot book. The book reflects her deepening philosophy of whole body movement. For the first time I feel like I really understand how the state of our feet affects the entire body--right up to the head. Most of the exercises were not new to me but some of them had a slightly new presentation that helped me get more from the material and there were a few new ones that are definitely challenging me.

"I must say that this is really a unique book on sampling theory. The introduction of vector space terminology right from the beginning is a great idea. Starting from classical sampling, the book goes all the way to the most recent breakthroughs including compressive sensing, union-of-subspace setting, and the CoSamp algorithm. Eldar has the right combination of mathematics and practical sense, and she has very good command of the 'art of writing'. This, combined with the archival nature of the topic (which has seen seven decades of history), makes the book an invaluable addition to the Cambridge collection of advanced texts in signal processing."

Yonina C. Eldar is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (holding the Edwards Chair in Engineering), a Research Affiliate with the Research Laboratory of Electronics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Visiting Professor at Stanford University. She has received numerous awards for excellence in research and teaching, including the Wolf Foundation Krill Prize for Excellence in Scientific Research, the Hershel Rich Innovation Award, the Michael Bruno Memorial Award from the Rothschild Foundation, the Weismann Prize for Exact Sciences, and the Muriel and David Jacknow Award for Excellence in Teaching. She is the Editor in Chief of Foundations and Trends in Signal Processing and an Associate Editor for several journals in the areas of signal processing and mathematics. She is a Signal Processing Distinguished Lecturer, an IEEE Fellow, a member of the Young Israel Academy of Science and the Israel Committee for Higher Education.
